Ukraine Mural

In Spring 2022, I took part in a Subversive Design course. The idea of the course was to create a public work of art to invoke local residents’ emotions in areas of gentrification. When the unforeseen events of war happened in Ukraine, our class felt it was only right we create a disruption for the greater good.

  • Our class originally had a different concept for our final. However, there were several students of Ukrainian background who asked if we could create for their country. Of course, the class said yes.

  • The class collected different icons associated with Ukraine’s call for support. Based on what we compiled, we split the design into three sections. The first is the Ukrainian side, showing its supporters there with them. The second is the middle where a tractor pulled away a tank. Lastly, the third is Russian side, showing how the Russia’s media is brainwashing the Russian public.

  • Once the design was decided on, the class outlined what we wanted on a 6ft x 90ft wall. Over the course of a week, we painted our concept while collecting over $2,000 to donate to Ukraine relief organizations.
